Furniture may be a necessity, but it can also be an expression of personality too. For decades, these practical items have been consistently changing in colour, size and shape, with new and interesting trends always emerging. However, sometimes a designer will throw a curve ball that just changes the way we see furniture completely. Oak Furniture UK have put together five truly strange pieces that we can’t help but want to get our hands on.

Walrus Chair

This is ideal for both animal lovers and lovers of statement furniture. This dramatic walrus chair is the creation of designer Maximo Riera, who has a whole zoo of comfortable creatures. The range also includes an elephant, a rhino and an octopus, among others, but this tusked fellow is our favourite.

Le Ballon Rouge Bench

This amazing bench creates the illusion that it’s floating in mid-air. It’s not balloons that are holding it up though, but rather four anchors concealed in the balloons, which are suspended from the ceiling. The designers have said that the piece was “visually inspired by the feeling of floating that the main character felt in the French movie ‘Le Ballon Rouge’”. Up, up and away.

Climbing Sofa

We’ve all heard of corner sofas, but designer Lila Jang took things one step further with this beautifully contemporary addition to the 2007 Parcours Saint Germain exhibition in Paris. This romantic-inspired coach looks as if it’s ready to leap into life and climb all the way up to the ceiling. We don’t want to be sitting on it when it does.

Baguette Table

It’s one thing sitting down at the table to eat, it’s a whole other thing to sit down and eat the table itself. This rather tasty specimen was designed by Studio Rygalik to “generate a discussion about food waste”. We don’t know if there’s a best before date on this one, but we’re getting hungry just looking at it.

Rocking Bed

While we’re happy to curl up in a classically designed bed, we definitely wouldn’t turn down a night rocking and rolling off to sleep in this. Created by Joe Manus, the rocking bed is available in twin, full, queen and king sizes in a variety of designs. It can gently lull you to sleep inside or let you stargaze as you drift off in the great outdoors. It even comes with a rubber stop, if all that swaying isn’t giving you sweet dreams.
