On the basis of an abandoned quarry in the hill Harpur Hill, near the English town of Buxton the homonymous lake looks like a true paradise. Water has a bright turquoise color reminiscent of the Mediterranean, while the locals call it Blue Lake. Until a few days, because now the lake is pitch black! That’s because in reality, the bright turquoise water of the lake is completely contaminated with toxic residues from industrial units in the area. There are warning signs that explain to the people the dangerous content of the lake dead animals, chemical wastes.
But despite the warnings, the lake is a strange holiday destination, as new families and settle on the shores and swim in its waters. The attractive color of the water caused by the surrounding limestone rocks, mainly of calcite crystals, which fall into the water and turn it into turquoise. The pH level of the water is 11.3, slightly lower than bleach and ammonia, toxic enough to cause skin diseases, eye irritation and fungal infections. Authorities therefore to prevent the bath waters have decided to paint black as a last attempt to tackle the problem. So the blue lagoon became black.
