If your loved ones aren’t quite as steady on their feet as they used to be, fear not – help is at hand.
The solution, according to its Japanese inventors, is this bizarre ‘human airbag’.
Sensors on a vest strapped round the wearer’s waist detect if he or she is taking a tumble.
Within 0.1 seconds, it inflates each of the two airbags to the size of three footballs, providing a soft padding to the back of the head and the backside.
Sadly, the 2 1/2lb (1.1kg) device, made by Japanese firm Prop, does have one or two drawbacks.
It only protects the wearer if he or she falls backwards, not forwards, and the price – around $1250 – seems a little-inflated.
The airbag was unveiled at the International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo, where it was displayed by Prop president Mitsuya Uchida.
Americans are unlikely to find out for themselves if it’s worth it, however, as the airbag is not yet available here.
Around 22 per cent of Japan’s population, nearly 30 million people, are over 65.
As well as the airbag, recent inventions to assist them include slippers with lights and a teapot which alerts family members if its owner does not make enough tea.

While we’ve seen everything from electric shavers to watches harness the power of the sun, this is the first time I can think of a vibrator taking the green path. I mean, why not right? Here are the details:
The Solar Sensation vibrator will charge in sunlight (5hrs) and artificial light (100w bulb 24hrs). It has three speeds and it will run 2.5 hours on a full charge (if you should last that long). A great way for avid users of vibrators to save tons of batteries while putting a smile on their faces.
Here’s one person that gave the unit a big thumbs-up:
” This product gives serious vibrations! No more throwing money away on batteries! Just charge it for the day on your window sill and it’s charged up for the night. This is the only vibrator I have come across where the wires don’t break. The extra money is well worth it!”
Well, if she likes it, there you have it! Wires don’t break? What are these people doing with these things? Don’t answer that.
