Stray Cats Keep Lost Boy Warm

Tags: , , , ,

MISIONES, Argentina — Argentine police say a destitute 1-year-old boy was kept alive by a colony of stray cats who shared food scraps and kept him warm in the city of Misiones.

The boy, who had been missing for several days, was found by Police Officer Lorean Lindgvist, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday

“The boy was lying at the bottom of a gutter. There were all these cats on top of him licking him because he was really dirty,” Lindgvist said. “When I walked over they became really protective and spat at me. They were keeping the boy warm while he slept.”

Lindgvist said she noticed scraps of food near the boy and surmised “the cats knew he was fragile and needed protecting,” the Telegraph reported, noting doctors said the warmth of the cats saved the boy during freezing nights that could have killed him.

The boy’s father, who is homeless, said his son vanished several days ago and that cats had always been protective of the boy, Lindgvist said.

German Prisoner Escapes in a Box

A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail.

The 42-year-old Turkish citizen – who was serving a seven-year sentence – had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for delivery to stores.

At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown.

The chief warden of the jail remarked this was an embarrassing incident.

The prison authorities in Willich, near Deusseldorf, said the man, who was tall and broad-shouldered, had hidden in a box that was about 150cm by 120cm.

When the weekly express courier arrived to pick up several boxes of merchandise, the one containing the prisoner was also loaded into the back of the lorry.

Shortly after it had passed through the prison gates, the inmate made his dash for freedom by cutting a big hole in the tarpaulin of the truck and jumping off.

The driver alerted the police after he noticed the tarpaulin flapping in the breeze.

The jail’s chief warden, Beate Peters, said the man must have had accomplices outside the prison.

“As soon as the prisoner jumped off the back of the lorry his friends would have picked him up,” she said.

“We have no idea where the fugitive is hiding. We assume that he is still in the county and is lying low before making his move.”

Ms Peters said fellow convicts must also have known of his plan but that they would not talk because of a “code of honor” and because it is a criminal offence in Germany to help somebody escape from jail.

She said the incident showed that security needed to be beefed up urgently, something she had been lobbying for in the last few years.

“I was not surprised that an escape happened on my watch. For years I had been asking for more security guards from the government. But now they’ll have to listen.”

Papua New Guinea Women Kill Male Babies to End Tribal War

Tags: , , , , , ,

WOMEN in Papua New Guinea’s Highland region are killing their male babies to end a tribal war that has gone on for more than 20 years.

Two women from the Eastern Highlands spoke of the slaughter to PNG’s National newspaper during a three-day peace and reconciliation course in the region’s capital of Goroka.

Rona Luke and Kipiyona Belas, from two warring tribes, said male infanticide reduced the cyclical payback violence infamous in Highlands tribal fights.

If women stopped producing males, their tribe’s stock would go down and this would force the men to end their fight, the women said.

“All the womenfolk agreed to have all male babies born killed because they have had enough of men engaging in tribal conflicts and bringing misery to them,” Ms Luke said.

The women could not give a figure on how many male babies had been killed.

Ms Belas said getting food was hard as husbands kept fighting and mothers and children were left to fend for themselves.

The Salvation Army told the Australian Associated Press that women were so fed up with the ongoing violence that they were taking drastic steps.

“This situation shows the extreme frustration the women have with the men in these areas,” a spokesman said.

Japanese Man Makes Mexico City Airport Home

MEXICO CITY – Hiroshi Nohara is on a layover at the Mexico City airport. It has lasted almost three months, and he has no plans to leave.

For reasons he can’t explain, the Japanese man has been in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport since Sept. 2, surviving off donations from fast-food restaurants and passengers and sleeping in a chair.

At first, he frightened passengers, and airport authorities asked the Japanese Embassy to investigate why the foul-smelling man refused to leave. Now, he’s somewhat of a celebrity, capturing Mexico’s collective imagination with nearly daily television news reports on his life at the food court.

Tourists stop to pose with him for photographs or get an autograph.

The Tokyo native flew into Mexico with a tourist visa and a return ticket home, but he never left the airport. In an interview Thursday alongside the airport McDonald’s, he said he had no motive for his extended stay and doesn’t know how much longer he’ll remain.

“I don’t understand why I’m here,” he said through a visiting interpreter originally hired by a television station. “I don’t have a reason.”

The embassy can’t force him to leave, and since Nohara’s visa is valid all Mexican officials can do it wait for it to expire in early March.

During his stay, Nohara’s wiry goatee has grown into a scraggly mass. His red-tinted hair is speckled with dust and dandruff, and his cream-colored jacket and fleece blanket are dingy with overuse. He smells like he hasn’t had a shower in months.

“He’s a calm person, a nice man,” said Silvia Navarrete del Toro, an airport janitor. “He just sits here and eats all day.”

Various stalls in the food court give Nohara free snacks and drinks, sometimes even throwing in hats or coffee mugs with store logos to get free publicity during his frequent television appearances.

Strangers often buy him pastries or hamburgers; he prefers the latter.

Man Drives Bus into Lake following GPS Instructions

Tags: , , , , , , ,

A Polish man drove his vehicle into a lake after following the instructions of a satellite navigation system, police have said.

The Mercedes mini-van driver ignored a series of warning signs before using an abandoned road which led to the lake. His vehicle was almost entirely submerged by the time emergency services arrived on the scene, but the man and his two passengers had already escaped unharmed.

“The man took a road that was closed a year ago when the area was flooded to make an artificial lake serving as a water reservoir – he ignored three road signs warning of a dead end,” Piotr Smolen, police spokesman in Glubczyce, southern Poland told AFP.

“It was still night time and he didn’t notice the road led into the lake. His GPS told him to drive straight ahead and he did.”

Smolen confirmed that the man in question made his first emergency call while he was still inside the sinking van. He then sat on the vehicle’s roof with his passengers as they waited for assistance.

Inside the Weird World of Japanese Pick Up Schools

TOKYO – Satoshi Fujita is not a good-looking man. He has oily skin, beady eyes, short legs and a boy-band wig to cover his balding head. But that hasn’t stopped him from becoming Japan’s most sought-after dating coach for geeks.

Fujita’s ‘Pickup School for Men Who Can’t Get Any’ teaches geeky, insecure men of all ages how to gain confidence, score dates and get laid — all based, he says, on a proprietary “science” he discovered after a decade of careful research.

“I always teach my students that sex comes first,” he says. “Then you figure out whether the woman is worth marrying later.”

The school is just one of many bizarre after-work coaching institutes in Japan. There are schools that specialize in everything from simple math problems to memory improvement. There are even schools for successful dating-by-text-message. Taking night classes is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture — starting in childhood, when parents enroll children in juku, or cram school.

Nanpa, or the act of picking up women, is one of the newer but more popular categories of cram schools in the country. There are at least half a dozen nanpa schools in the Tokyo area alone.

Some of Fujita’s classes take place in a classroom, but most of them are held on street corners to simulate real nanpa situations. Fujita estimates that he teaches more than a hundred students a month, with some classes — like How to Use Magic to Gain Popularity and How to Seduce Women — attracting dozens of students. Each class costs 30,000 yen ($280).

His students — electronics company executives, engineers who have little interaction with women except through online porn, and average-looking college geeks who need an extra oomph — seem happy with what they’re learning.

“Since joining Mr. Fujita’s school, I have had five successful relationships,” says Hachioji Robocop, a 27-year-old civil servant who has been taking the course since 2004. “I lost my virginity six months into the course, and now I can now communicate with women. I’m very grateful.”

Fujita opened up his first dating crash course for geeks in 2002. Today, he has written three self-help books for unpopular guys, and his techniques have been featured in magazines and television shows.

Through most of his 20s, Fujita was introverted and completely clueless about women. “It was so shocking when my hair started to fall out,” he says. “I was scared to look in the mirror and completely froze up when I talked to women.” For years, he hid behind his receding hairline, avoiding social events and wondering what it was like to be intimate with a girl.

Then, in the mid-1990s, he started studying the techniques of masterful pickup artists and charismatic celebrities in an effort to hone his own womanizing skills. He registered with a professional matchmaker, who started setting up dates, but things turned around only when Fujita bought his first wig at age 34.

In his book Zura Ga Kanojo Ni Bareta Toki (The Time My Girlfriend Discovered I Was Wearing a Wig), Fujita describes how his confidence soared after this slight change in appearance. He felt like a woman who had just gotten breast implants, he wrote.

He also learned that a few simple tricks can go a long way: Women like laughter, compliments and magic tricks. Using these concepts, he devised a proprietary “science” for picking up women that takes into consideration things like reading signals and timing.

After 10 years and 10 new wigs, he’d become so successful with women, he says, that he decided to quit his job and make dating his profession.

Among other tricks, Fujita’s method involves a deck of “psychoanalytic” cards that help him determine what kind of girl he has picked up.

He’s also got a bag of tricks — literally — that includes flaming wallets, talking ferrets and animated algae balls. Fujita asked Wired.com not to disclose anything more detailed, for fear of giving away his closely guarded trade secrets.

“This may seem ridiculous, but if you follow a specific equation, it really works,” he says.

One bit of advice Fujita was willing to dish out concerns online dating: It doesn’t work, he says.

“If you’re not tall and good-looking, or you don’t work at a top-rate company, then you can’t really score dates on a dating website,” he says.

Instead, “Picking up women on the streets is the best method for people who need miracles.”

Man Marries Dog to Atone for Past Deeds

Tags: , ,

NEW DELHI — Selva Kumar had been hounded for 15 years by the memory of a horrible act he’d committed as a teenager. As an 18-year-old he had stoned and clubbed to death two dogs he found engaged in mating. He then hung their carcasses from a tree.

That’s when his personal suffering began.

“After that my legs and hands got paralyzed and I lost hearing in one ear,” Kumar told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Kumar, now 33 and living in the southern Indian district of Sivaganga, could no longer take the physical pain of the “dog curse,” so he sought the advice of an astrologer.

Her cure for his maladies?
“Marry a dog.”

Which is just what Kumar did on Sunday.

In a ceremony befitting a beautiful Indian bride, the bitch, a former 10-year-old stray named “Selvi,” was bathed and dressed in a ceremonial orange sari with a garland of flowers adorning her neck. She was then brought to the temple in Tamil Nadu to be presented to Kumar by members of his family.

Kumar, sitting beside his bride, recited his marriage vows, declaring, “I will take care of it until its death.” Then, the “couple” was declared married.

Deeply superstitious people in rural India sometimes organize weddings to dogs and other animals, believing it can ward off certain curses.

The Hindustan Times reported Kumar’s family hosted a feast — while Selvi dined on a bun.
No word on where the couple would honeymoon or reside, or whether they had registered for gifts.

Woman Kicked Out of New Zealand For Being Too Fat

Tags: , , , ,

.

They were planning to start a new life in a new country but Rowan Trezise, age 33, has been told by the government of New Zealand that she and her husband may have to look elsewhere for a place to live, because she is too fat to be allowed into the country.

Although both husband and wife were too fat for admittance when they first applied Mr. Trezise, a submarine cable specialist who was once a member of the British Army, has managed to shed two inches from his waistline thereby meeting the standards set for a work visa.

Mrs. Trezise however has not met the goal set for her and is therefore barred.

The couple were informed that New Zealand bars overweight people because of the potential burden they pose to the national health care system. According to New Zealand Robyn Toomath, spokesman of “Fight the Obesity Epidemic” a New Zealand organization dealing with the problems posed by overweight people:

“The immigration department can’t afford to import people who are going to be a significant drain on our health resources.

“You can see the logic in assessing if there is a significant health cost associated with this individual and that would be a reason for them not coming in.”

New Zealand’s Immigration Service has not said how many people have been bared from entering the country due to their weight but according to the Emigrate New Zealand website that number is fairly high. Unless Rowan Trezise can shed the weight by Christmas the couple say they will abandon their plans to relocate to New Zealand.

Romania Tries to Make Media Tell Good News Stories

Tags: ,

The Romanian Constitutional Court has just quashed an attempt by the legislature to make the news media broadcast equal measures of good and bad news.

Politicians in Romania said that too much bad news is being reported and it is bringing people down. Bemoaning the negative effects of bad news on “the health and life of the people”, they successfully put a law through the Romanian senate that required radio and television companies to broadcast one good news story for every bad news story.

The law was sponsored by senators from the National Liberal Party and the far-right Great Romania Party and passed by the Romanian senate. What was needed, the politicians enthusiastically agreed, was less news about depressing things such as incompetent politicians and more news about cheery things.

They legislated that the National Audiovisual Council would need to judge what was positive news and what was negative news. The chairman of the council, though, was understandably perplexed. He pointed out that such a half-good and half-bad recipe for all news broadcasts would be impossible. He said: “News is news. It is neither positive nor negative. It simply reflects reality.”

The opposition liberal democrats argued that the “good news” law was unacceptable as it restricted freedom of expression. The court agreed, and declared the legislation unconstitutional.
