I think the problem here is that the government would have been paying for their healthcare in the first place. If she had to supply her own healthcare then her weight would be her problem. The idea of blocking admittance to an individual based on weight is absurd, especially when you’re only reason is an internal flaw within your own country’s government healthcare system.

This is the kind of thing that happens when a government completely takes over a public service (like health care). Certainly these individuals are overweight; but that shouldn’t preclude them from working.

Note that although this issue occurred during an immigration process, it goes beyond that to point to an underlying problem — to a system that may one day turn on its own citizens who are a “significant drain” on the service.

it’s not oppression, it is them saying “you are at risk of too many health problems for our health care system to take care of. If you remedy this problem, you will be allowed to live here” you act like obese is a race or some shit, its not, its a health problem.

Everyone keeps jumping on this Fascism bandwagon. YOU need to learn the difference between OBESE and fat. My sister in law is fat. She’s just fine that way. However, she is NOT OBESE. There is a difference!!! There is NO quantification in this article, and you know what?! NZ has the RIGHT to refuse admittance to ANYONE they desire, because NZ belongs to NZ. You appall at their RULES is similar to me being mad at you for not letting a crack head in your house. IT IS THEIR HOUSE, they can do what they want.

With New Zealand and Australia’s immigration policies I adore them. I applaud their conviction and not worrying about political correctness. If you don’t like it find another country to go to, it’s a big world. I wish that Canada had a fraction of backbone like this.

Yeah, there’s a bit of a difference between “genetically overweight” and “obese”. Genetically overweight generally means you’re probably, on average, about 20 pounds heavier than you should be, unless for some reason social/economic/other genetic factors dictate otherwise.

Looking it up, they’re basically saying that if your BMI is 35+, you’ll be barred. Somebody who is 6 feet, 230 pounds (which is my stature, I’m of fair size) only has a BMI of 31.2. At 250 pounds, which would make you considerably large, still only a BMI of 33.9. You would have to be pretty large overall (257+ lbs on a 6 foot person), and what is definitely identified as the point of being a serious health-risk factor, for you even to be barred. It might be a slight bit discriminatory, but not without careful thought and research, which is probably what this world needs at this point.
